PIAB welcomes Road Safety Initiatives
The Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB), the agency which administers personal injury claims in Ireland, today welcomed the Fourth Interim Report on Reforms to the Irish Insurance Market (Road Safety) launched by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and Small Business.
"It is accepted that road safety in this country is being addressed in a number of ways. The JOC Report this week set out specific recommendations ranging from driver instruction to education and the use of modern technological aids," commented Ms. Byron, Chief Executive of PIAB.
"In the past 2 years, following the establishment of PIAB we have received nearly 25,000 personal injury claims of which just over half are in respect of motor accidents. PIAB deals with the fallout from these horrific accidents on a daily basis and witnesses first hand the cost to individuals, families, the economy and the country at large," Ms. Byron said.
"Statistics show that many road accidents occur late at night and involve young people. Young adults today have fast-paced modern lives and we must engage with the youth of this country using the education system, modern driving instruction systems and, where appropriate, the use of technologies such as the installation of black box recorders in larger vehicles/cars. The cost of such technology is competitive coming in at approximately €150 per unit."
"The measures recommended this week by the JOC, in addition to their previous reports, are to be welcomed in combating the current loss of life on our roads and the cost to individuals in their personal lives and society through the cost of claims which PIAB deals with on a daily basis" stated Ms. Byron.
