Press Release 4th October 2004
PIAB responds to legal challenge
"We welcome the opportunity to clarify this important issue"
In response to an application lodged in court today challenging the Personal Injuries Assessment Board's procedures of communicating directly with claimants, Patricia Byron, Chief Executive said:
PIAB was established this year to reduce the costs of delivering compensation to victims of negligent accidents. PIAB commenced operations in June 2004 and extended its remit from 22nd July 2004 to cover all personal injury claims (apart from those involving medical negligence).
"We welcome the opportunity to clarify this important issue. Clarification in relation to this procedure being employed by PIAB in implementing the Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003 can only be beneficial to the public at large.
PIAB is committed to working entirely within its powers and always puts claimants interests at the heart of all its processes and procedures. In the meantime PIAB will continue to deal directly with claimants to ensure they are fully informed as to the progress of their claim. PIAB will continue to copy correspondence to any representative when requested to do so by a claimant".
