Respondent Identification Guide

The Respondent is the person or company you are making the claim against and are holding responsible for the injury/accident.

In making a claim you must be sure of the name and address of the person or company against whom you want to make a claim. In some instances there may be more than one party responsible for the accident and you should name all potentially responsible parties on your application from.

If the Respondent is a company then details of the correct title and registered office of the company can be checked with the Companies Registration Office, www.cro.ie. For the purposes of naming a Respondent a Business Name will not suffice. Details as to the owner of a Business Name can also be obtained in the Companies Registration Office.

If you have been involved in a motor accident you can claim against the owner and driver of the offending vehicle. Details of the ownership of vehicles can be obtained from An Garda Siochana or the Local Authority with whom the vehicle is registered.

It is important that the correct Respondent is identified when making the Application to the Board. If you do not name the correct Respondent at the outset you may be unable to proceed with your claim at a later stage.
