Top Ten Tips for A Healthy Recovery

Dr. Mark Hamilton,
Clinical Fellow, A&E, Salford Royal Hospital, Manchester and Presenter of RTE's "How Long Will You Live?"

Dr. Mark Hamilton, in association with InjuriesBoard.ie, has devised the following list of recommendations to assist Claimants on the road to a speedy recovery following a personal injury.

1. Ensure that as soon as possible after sustaining a personal injury, you seek medical advice by visiting your general practitioner or the appropriate medical specialist.

2. It is important that you seek the correct medical attention and course of treatment for your injury.

3. Take the opportunity to talk to your doctor/medical practitioner about any concerns you may have in relation to your injury as this will help recovery.

4. Be aware of your injury and what the recovery process will entail:
- know how long the recovery process should take;
- be aware of what the various stages of recovery are; and
- what steps you can take to help this process along.

5. Always be aware of your symptoms and if they are worsening make sure to follow up with your doctor to make him/her aware of this.

6. Try and maintain a healthy diet as the correct nutrition will aid your recovery. It is recommended that you eat five portions of fruit and vegetables per day as they are an excellent source of fibre, minerals and vitamins that will help to get you back on your feet.

7. Whether you have sustained a motor accident or an accident in the workplace or public space, depending on the extent of your injury, you may require time off work. Ensure that you follow the guidance of your medical practitioner in this regard so that your injury has fully healed and you are deemed fit to return to work.

8. Build up your activity levels gradually, be realistic about what you can achieve and always follow the instructions of your treating medical practitioner before resuming any strenuous physical activities.

9. Keep a positive outlook during the recovery process as this is an important aid.

10. Aim to reduce stress levels as anxiety will only slow down the recovery process. Aim for a common sense balance between periods of rest and activity. Do not over exert yourself as you are recovering, but a steady and gradual return to normal activity, under the guidance of your doctor, is the ultimate goal.

InjuriesBoard.ie have also set out the following guides which will hopefully assist you in recovering from your injuries and perhaps prevent accidents occurring in the future.
